How? And Why? To use a coach or mentor
Most corporate executives have had some exposure to coaches or mentors, either personally or second hand, through colleagues. It is easy to assume, without realising you're doing so, that what other people have experienced is what you will experience, and that the people your colleagues use are the only type of person available. This kind of assumption can be quite unhelpful, as it can create the feeling of being in a 'seller's market' - which is erroneous. There is a vast range of coaches and mentors around, and most of them are looking for work much of the time. In reality, you the client have the control, and the key questions to ask when considering the possibility of using a coach or mentor are along the lines of ...
- Is there anything about your working life at the moment which you are finding challenging? or do you see scope for much greater success?
- Do you think that the right kind of input might help you either to solve your problems better, or to take better advantage of the opportunities available to you?
- Do you feel comfortable in principle with the idea of being helped by someone who fits with your requirements?
